WHY I STARTED
Namaste. I'm Ami Shah, Founder and Director of Devpriya Yoga.

My journey with yoga began when I was just 10 years old. I practiced alongside a teacher who had also taught my grandfather in India. At that age, I could not have imagined how deeply yoga would become a part of my life. Like many of us, life eventually took me in different directions, but those early experiences stayed with me.
I found my way back to yoga at the age of 35, while living in the United States and balancing life as a pharmacist, a wife, and a mother of two boys. Life was full and, at times, overwhelming. I wasn't looking for exercise. I was looking for a way to feel grounded again. Under the loving guidance of my teacher, Sarita Aunty, my connection with yoga grew into something much deeper. It helped me understand the close relationship between the mind and body and the importance of finding balance in our modern, demanding lives.
That experience inspired me to study yoga more deeply and eventually share it with others. Devpriya Yoga grew from a desire to offer authentic yoga practices that bring together Postures (Asanas), Breathwork (Pranayama), and Meditation in a way that is meaningful for everyday life. Today, I continue to learn, practice, and teach with gratitude for my teachers and for everyone who joins me on this journey.

What Yoga means to me
Yoga, for me, is a way of bringing the body, breath, and mind together. My teaching focuses on helping students understand their practice, listen to their bodies, and find a sense of balance that they can carry into everyday life.
Connect With Your Breath
The breath is at the heart of the practice. Through pranayama and mindful breathing, we learn to quiet the mind, improve focus, and create a greater sense of calm.
Take It Beyond the Mat
The benefits of yoga continue beyond our practice. With regular practice, we can become more aware of our thoughts, our emotions, and the way we respond to the demands of everyday life.
Listen to your Body
Yoga teaches us to pay attention to what our body is telling us. I encourage students to practice with awareness, respect their own limitations, and gradually build strength, flexibility, and confidence.

LEARNING NEVER STOPS
A Lifelong Student of Yoga
Yoga is a lifelong journey for me. I continue to return to India, study with experienced teachers, attend workshops, and deepen my understanding of the traditional teachings so that my own practice and teaching continue to grow.
Returning to India
I continue to travel to India to study with experienced teachers and deepen my understanding of traditional yoga. These journeys allow me to learn directly from the traditions and teachings that have shaped my own practice.
Continuing the Study
My learning does not stop with formal training. I continue through workshops, self-study, and regular study of the Patanjali Yoga Sutras and traditional yogic texts, bringing that deeper understanding into my own practice and teaching.
